Secure Internet PIN Debit
A safe, convenient, and reliable online payment solution.
Cardholders today enjoy a secure PIN debit experience at brick-and-mortar locations. ACCEL/Exchange has just expanded this experience to
e-commerce transaction sets. Cardholders of eligible ACCEL/Exchange member financial institutions now have another safe, convenient, and reliable option to initiate secure online payments for their purchases, that is, the same debit card and PIN they are familiar with using at a traditional (non-Internet) retail or merchant location.
In addition to added consumer convenience, secure Internet PIN debit and its two-factor authentication provides card issuers a powerful transaction tool that delivers the following benefits:
- Payment offering differentiation
through delivery of a payment alternative that is easily incorporated into existing operational processes.
- Encryption and security processes aimed at reducing fraud and adjustments,
along with their associated expenses.
- Increased transaction volume resulting in incremental revenue
from cardholders who cannot use their debit card online without a PIN, and security-conscious consumers who prefer PIN debit.
- Secure Internet PIN debit offers members another payment solution from ACCEL/Exchange that ensures the card issuer is kept in the transaction payment chain, unlike many other alternative non-financial institution payment channels. This helps prevent the loss of transactions to these other online payment methods.
Consumers are seeking payment methods that deliver greater security and reliability, without having to enroll their cards with, or provide other personal information to, a third-party. Through a business partnership with Acculynk, a leading technology provider with a suite of software-only services that secure online transactions, ACCEL/Exchange provides its members and participants an ideal payment method that gives consumers a secure and convenient method to pay for purchases on the Internet.
The ACCEL/Exchange secure Internet PIN debit payment solution is incorporated into the merchant checkout process, but is transparent until it is needed. When a consumer initiates payment by entering their card number and associated information as they normally would, a validation check confirms that the card can be used with a PIN. Using their computer's mouse, the cardholder enters their PIN on a graphic, scrambling PIN pad. The PIN is encrypted and the transaction is then securely processed through ACCEL/Exchange. Token values that represent actual PINs are created through a unique, dynamically-generated algorithm that protects the PIN because no one sees it, and it never passes through to the merchant. This results in transactions being securely and seamlessly routed and authorized in a PCI-compliant processing environment.
Entering PIN information through this patented, scrambling PIN pad means keystrokes cannot be captured because a keyboard is not used for PIN entry. Only the coordinates of the entry of each number of the PIN are transmitted over the Internet, which means the actual numbers of the PIN cannot be captured during transmission. Once the transaction has been successfully processed, the PIN pad disappears and the cardholder receives a payment confirmation page from the merchant they can print and keep for their records. Internet PIN debit transactions are accurately recorded on the cardholder's monthly financial institution statement along with their other POS activity.
As the payments environment continues to evolve, ACCEL/Exchange is committed to expanding the boundaries of traditional payment solutions and acceptance of debit in non-traditional markets. Our market approach drives us to expand the breadth and convenience of payment options that keep our members in the transaction payment chain. Creating new transactions, and associated interchange revenue, through our secure Internet PIN debit solution is just one example.
